Sales are falling! Is Tesla hiding the numbers?

Tesla is one of the few automakers that does not disclose sales by model. The company’s popular models, the Model S and Model X, are experiencing a serious decline in sales and Tesla may be trying to hide it. But is Tesla really hiding sales?

Tesla currently only divides sales into two categories: Model 3/Y and “other models”. This “other models” category includes vehicles like the Model S, Model X, Cybertruck and Tesla Semi. So, it’s not easy to track the sales of the Model S and Model X exactly.

Last week, Tesla announced that it sold a total of 21,551 “other models” in the second quarter. If we consider that the Cybertruck model is between 8 thousand and 9 thousand among Tesla sales, the deliveries of Model S and Model X are around 12 thousand-13 thousand units. This means a 31-37 percent decrease compared to the same period last year. Therefore, Tesla may be justified in not disclosing these sales.

Tesla is now facing much more competition for luxury segment sales. Every luxury carmaker is offering premium sedans and SUVs that compete with Tesla’s best-selling models. The Model S and Model X are still very competitive, but their technology advantage seems to be diminishing. This is causing Tesla to lose interest in these models and focus on the higher-volume Model 3 and Model Y.

In fact, the Model S and Model X are not vital to Tesla’s overall performance. Sales of these models are much lower volume than the others. However, this could serve as a warning for Tesla’s future models. In other words, Tesla has to constantly innovate to stay ahead of the competition.

Tesla’s limited ability to advance multiple vehicle programs simultaneously may be one of its biggest weaknesses. We know that traditional automakers are more used to working on multiple models and have more experience in vehicle sales.

What do you think? Will Tesla be successful in the long run if it goes this way? You can share your views with us in the comments section below.
